Mozbar Browser Plugin

We wanted to create a chrome toolbar extension so our users could have realtime access to the data that MOZ provided on the sites they were browsing.

THE PROJECT

We wanted to create a chrome toolbar extension so our users could have realtime access to MOZ information on the sites they were browsing. The MOZbar would allow users to access and compare link metrics across pages while viewing any SERP. It would also support searching and highlight keywords on a page and differentiate links by type: Followed, No-Followed, External, or Internal. Since we were utilizing the MOZscape crawl data, it would also provide quick access to ranking probability with Page Authority and Domain Authority.

MY ROLE

My role as the UX designer on the project was to build an experience that would integrate into the chrome browser and allow users to easily access the data they needed about a given page they were browsing. We also overlaid information directly onto the search engine results pages and needed to play well with the major search engine experiences. The goal was to design something that could be open at all time and provide relevant information while not being too intrusive with the browsing experience.

THE CHALLENGE

We knew that people were relying on SEOmoz to help with their search marketing campaigns and needed something to use while browsing in real-time. The challenge was to design something that could be open at all time and provide relevant information while not being too intrusive with the browsing experience. We needed to have a clear hierarchy of information that made the MOZbar information relevant and actionable at all times.

WHAT WAS LEARNED

This would be the first browser extension that I would build and proved to be an ongoing learning process. I learned a fair amount about the advantages and limitations of browser extensions along the way.
